ABKCO 2002 SACD's Reissues

Summary

These recordings are superior sound sources to any other previously available, including German and Japanese London/PolyGram CD issues.
• They have quality digipack type packaging and nice picture CD's. This packaging was clearly influenced by the illegitimate Mono digipacks that came out in the 2000/2001 time frame.
• Only three bonus tracks added to the whole remaster series. The original track listings are not sanctified (IMHO) and therefore greater advantage could have been taken of the extended media time available to add unreleased era tracks from each album.
• Good effort has been made to get the proper takes of songs with different versions correct with respect to those used on the original vinyl releases. These were confused on the initial ABKCO CD releases. These songs include Tell Me, Time Is On My Side, and Everybody Needs Somebody To Love.
• You will still need to find the London/PolyGram CD version of "Hot Rocks 1" to have complete stereo versions due to the exclusion of Play With Fire, Satisfaction, and Get Off Of My Cloud in stereo format on these remasters.
• You will need the
"Aftermath - UK" remaster CD to have the best source for a stereo version of Mother's Little Helper.
• To complete track lists for all possible songs in stereo you will need the unauthorized recording
"Time Trip Volume 5" to complete the track lists of albums consisting of the songs The Last Time, 19th Nervous Breakdown, and Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow. The released album take of Prodigal Son can be found in Stereo on unauthorized recordings such as "R.S.V.P. Revisited" or "R.S.V.P. New Version".

Comment: All potential stereo tracks in MONO except songs 4 & 6-13 on CD 3. I thought maybe they were going for some 1960's 45 rpm mono AM radio sound on the whole compilation until you get to CD 3. Incoherent and pointless. I don' get it at all.

"Metamorphosis"

ABKCO Records, SACD Reissue 2002 (90062)

Out Of Time 3:22/Don't Lie To Me 2:02/Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind 2:27/Each And Every Day Of The Year 2:49/Heart Of Stone 3:48/I'd Much Rather Be With The Boys 2:12/(Walking Thru The) Sleepy City 2:52/We're Wastin' Time 2:44/Try A Little Harder 2:19/I Don't Know Why 3:02/If You Let Me 3:18/Jiving Sister Fanny 3:25/Downtown Suzie 3:53/Family 4:06/Memo From Turner 2:46/I'm Going Down 2:52

"More Hot Rocks (big hits and phased cookies)"

ABKCO Records, SACD Reissue 2002 (96262)

CD 1: Tell Me 3:49 (Longer guitar solo version)/Not Fade Away 1:49/The Last Time 3:42 (Mono)/It's All Over Now 3:27 (Stereo)/Good Times Bad Times 2:31/I'm Free 2:25/Out Of Time 3:43 (Short Version)/Lady Jane 3:09/Sittin' On A Fence 3:04/Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow? 2:36 (Mono)/Dandelion 3:33 (Stereo)/We Love You 4:21 (Stereo, with added words "Your Health" at the outro)

CD 2: She's A Rainbow 4:13 /2000 Light Years From Home 4:47/Child Of The Moon (Stereo) 3:11/No Expectations 3:57/Let It Bleed 5:30/What To Do 2:34 (Stereo)/Fortune Teller 2:19/*Poison Ivy (Version 1) 2:36/*Everybody Needs Somebody To Love 5:05 (Long UK version)/Come On 1:50/Money 2:34/Bye Bye Johnny 2:12/Poison Ivy (Version 2) 2:09/*I've Been Loving You Too Long 2:57 (In Stereo. Without the clapping over dub heard on "got LIVE if you want it!". Previously released on the LP "Collector's Only" on German vinyl)/I Can't Be Satisfied 3:28 (Stereo)/Long Long While 3:01

*Bonus Tracks

Comments: A potential stereo track The Last Time is presented in mono. You will need the "Time Trip Volume 5" b00tleg to hear The Last Time in best possible stereo sound. It has an interesting instrument left vocals and lead guitar right stereo mix. Another potential stereo track Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow? is also mono and can be found on the unathorized "Time Trip Volume 5" recording in it's proper Stereo.

"Hot Rocks 1964-1971"

ABKCO Records, SACD Reissue 2002 (96672)

CD 1: Time Is On My Side 3:00 (Guitar intro. version - Stereo)/Heart Of Stone 2:51 (True Stereo)/Play With Fire 2:16 (Mono)/Satisfaction 3:44/ (Mono)As Tears Go By 2:46 (As Always Mono)/Get Off Of My Cloud 2:56 (Mono)/Mother's Little Helper 2:48/19th Nervous Breakdown 3:58 (Mono)/Paint It Black 3:24 (How many years gone by and how many CD's sold before this song is properly represented in true stereo on US commercial releases?)/Under My Thumb 3:44 (Stereo)/Ruby Tuesday 3:18 (Stereo)/Let's Spend The Night Together 3:35 (Stereo)

CD 2: Jumpin' Jack Flash 3:43/Street Fighting Man 3:15/Sympathy For The Devil 6:19/Honky Tonk Women 3:02 (Now In True Stereo!)/Gimme Shelter 4:32/Midnight Rambler (Live "Ya-Ya's" version) 9:15/You Can't Always Get What You Want 7:29/Brown Sugar 3:50/Wild Horses 5:42

Comments: Play With Fire is in hissy MONO. This has got to be a MISTAKE! The song is dramatic and dynamic in it's proper stereo. You will need an out of print Japanese or German London/PolyGram "Hot Rocks 1" to hear Play With Fire in stereo. Mother's Little Helper and 19th Nervous Breakdown are also in MONO. You will need the SACD edition of "Aftermath-UK" to hear Mother's Little Helper in stereo and the "Time Trip Volume 5" b00tleg to hear 19th Nervous Breakdown in best possible stereo sound. Satisfaction is in it's proper MONO with a very nice sound enhancement. This song was first heard on single speaker AM radios and must be remembered as it is heard here and not in the stereo version which borders on an alternate take. Get Off Of My Cloud is in mono where stereo is available and can be found in true stereo on out of print Japan or German London/Polygram CDs. Brown Sugar is really cleaned-up. The opening guitar distortion and saxophone saturates on other recordings.

"Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!"

ABKCO Records, SACD Reissue 2002 (90052)

Jumpin' Jack Flash 4:02/Carol 3:46/Stray Cat Blues 3:40/Love In Vain 4:56/Midnight Rambler 9:04/Sympathy For The Devil 6:51/Live With Me 3:02/Little Queenie 4:33/Honky Tonk Women 3:34/Street Fighting Man 4:03

Comment: See the "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!: The Source Shows And Overdubs" page on this web site for what should have been done with album track wise. Just look at what The Who did with the upgraded "Live At Leeds" CD issue. Sound quality is quite good though, especially the upper frequency stuff.

"Let It Bleed"

ABKCO Records, SACD Reissue 2002 (90042)

Gimme Shelter 4:30/Love In Vain 4:19/Country Honk 3:07/Live With Me 3:33/Let it Bleed 5:27/Midnight Rambler 6:52/You Got the Silver 2:50/Monkey Man 4:11/You Can't Always Get What You Want 7:28

Comment: Sound fidelity is very good with respect to instrument distinction and reverb, but a little too hissy when Played Loud.

"Through The Past, Darkly"

ABKCO Records, SACD Reissue 2002 (90032)

Paint It Black 3:23/Ruby Tuesday 3:18/She's A Rainbow 4:13/Jumpin' Jack Flash 3:42/Mother's Little Helper 2:47 (Mono)/Let's Spend The Night Together 3:36/Honky Tonk Women 3:02/Dandelion 3:33/2000 Light Years From Home 4:46/Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby Standing In The Shadow? 2:35 (Mono)/Street Fighting Man 3:15

Comment: Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow? is mono (see comments for "More Hot Rocks"). Mother's Little Helper is also in Mono (see comments for "Hot Rocks").

"Beggars Banquet"

ABKCO Records, SACD Reissue 2002 (95392)

Sympathy For The Devil 6:18/No Expectations 3:56/Dear Doctor 3:22/Parachute Woman 2:20/Jigsaw Puzzle 6:06/Street Fighting Man 3:16/Prodigal Son 2:52/Stray Cat Blues 4:37/Factory Girl 2:09/Salt Of The Earth 4:47

Comment: Maybe this one was redone from the MFSL tapes because it has stereo separation that could once only be heard on out of print West German London label import CD's (Order number was: 800 084-2). Note that Prodigal Son is in Mono as always. You'll need to look for unauthorized outtakes titles such as "R.S.V.P. Revisited" or "R.S.V.P. New Version" to find this in it's proper stereo. I have play lists in iTunes for "The Alternate Beggars Banquet", "The Alternate Let It Bleed", and the "The Alternate Sticky Fingers" to address such issues.

"Their Satanic Majesties Request"

ABKCO Records, SACD Reissue 2002 (90022)

Sing This All Together 3:46/Citadel 2:50/In Another Land 3:15/2000 Man 3:07/Sing This All Together (See What Happens) 8:33/She's A Rainbow 4:35/The Lantern 4:23/Gomper 5:08/2000 Light Years From Home 4:45/On With The Show 3:39

Comnment: It's still a disaster. The worst Rolling Stones record ever made. Gomper is the worst song ever recorded. They reply to "Sgt. Pepper" with this?

"Flowers"

ABKCO Records, SACD Reissue 2002 (95092)

Ruby Tuesday 3:17/Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow? 2:35/Let's Spend The Night Together 3:38/Lady Jane 3:08/Out Of Time 3:42/My Girl 2:39/Back Street Girl 3:26 (Short version)/Please Go Home 3:19/Mother's Little Helper 2:47/Take It Or Leave It 2:47/Ride On, Baby 2:53/Sittin' On A Fence 3:02

Comment: Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow? and Mother's Little Helper are in Mono. See comments in "Through The Past Darkly" for more information on the stereo sources for these tracks.

"Between The Buttons - UK"

ABKCO Records, SACD Reissue 2002 (95002)

Yesterday's Papers 2:05/My Obsession 3:18/Back Street Girl 3:28 (Short Version)/Connection 2:10/She Smiled Sweetly 2:45/Cool, Calm & Collected 4:19/All Sold Out 2:18/Please Go Home 3:18/Who's Been Sleeping Here? 3:57/Complicated 3:16/Miss Amanda Jones 2:48/Something Happened To Me Yesterday 4:55

Comment: UK Decca LP track listing with added tracks Back Street Girl and Please Go Home.

"Between The Buttons"

ABKCO Records, SACD Reissue 2002 (94992)

Let's Spend The Night Together 3:37/Yesterday's Papers 2:05/Ruby Tuesday 3:17/Connection 2:10/She Smiled Sweetly 2:45/Cool, Calm & Collected 4:19/All Sold Out 2:18/My Obsession 3:18/Who's Been Sleeping Here? 3:57/Complicated 3:16/Miss Amanda Jones 2:48/Something Happened To Me Yesterday 4:55

"got LIVE if you want it!"

ABKCO Records, SACD Reissue 2002 (94932)

Under My Thumb 2:53/Get Off Of My Cloud 2:54/Lady Jane 3:08/Not Fade Away 2:03/I've Been Loving You Too Long 2:54/Fortune Teller 1:56/The Last Time 3:07/19th Nervous Breakdown 3:30/Time Is On My Side 2:48/I'm Alright 2:26/Have You Seen Your Mother Baby, Standing In The Shadow? 2:19/Satisfaction 3:04

Comment: There is an extended announcer introduction and the version of Under My Thumb is different than the original LP issue. Time is On My Side and Satisfaction have been remixed as is the case with all CD issues. Despite the effort to clean this up it is still a terrible respresentation of where the Stones were really distinctively better than say, The Beatles in the day, and that was in live performance. Clearly even today this is still a testiment to the enduring distinction of this band. They never released this recording in their homeland as a Decca LP issue except for export. This should be indication enough of how they felt about it. Opportunity missed.

"Aftermath - UK"

ABKCO Records, SACD Reissue 2002 (94772)

Mother's Little Helper 2:45/Stupid Girl 2:56/Lady Jane 3:08/Under My Thumb 3:41/Doncha Bother Me 2:41/Going Home 11:14/Flight 505 3:27/High And Dry 3:08/Out Of Time 5:37/It's Not Easy 2:56/I Am Waiting 3:11/Take It Or Leave It 2:47/Think 3:09/What To Do 2:32

Comment: The only SACD source with the stereo Mother's Little Helper. Also the only source from the re-issues with the long version of Out Of Time as was the case with the original UK Decca LP version of this title. The UK track list also added Take It Or Leave It and What To Do at the end of album.

"Aftermath"

ABKCO Records, SACD Reissue 2002 (94762)

Paint It, Black 3:22/Stupid Girl 2:56/Lady Jane 3:08/Under My Thumb 3:42/Doncha Bother Me 2:41/Think 3:09/Flight 505 3:27/High and Dry 3:08/It's Not Easy 2:56/I Am Waiting 3:11/Going Home 11:13
Comments: All in nice true wide stereo just like the original vinyl LP's, but this was not the case for the initial 1986 CD releases which had little or no stereo separation.

"Big Hits (High Tide And Green Grass)"

ABKCO Records, SACD Reissue 2002 (90012)

(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction 3:44 (Mono)/The Last Time 3:42 (Mono)/As Tears Go By 2:46 (Mono as always)/Time Is On My Side (Guitar version - Stereo) 3:01/It's All Over Now 3:27 (Stereo)/Tell Me 3:49 (Mono)/19th Nervous Breakdown 3:58 (Mono)/Heart Of Stone 2:52 (Stereo)/Get Off My Cloud 2:56 (Mono)/Not Fade Away 1:49/Good Times, Bad Times 2:32 (Mono)/Play With Fire (Mono) 2:13

Comments: Satisfaction is mono as on "Hot Rocks". The Last Time is mono (see comments for "More Hot Rocks"). Again 19th Nervous Breakdown is mono (see notes for "Hot Rocks"). Get Off My Cloud is in mono (see notes for "Hot Rocks"). Play With Fire is also mono where stereo is available (see notes for "Hot Rocks").

"Decembers Children (and everybody's)"

ABKCO Records, SACD Reissue 2002 (94512)

She Said Yeah 1:35/Talkin' About You 2:31/You Better Move On 2:40/Look What You've Done 2:16 (Stereo)/The Singer Not The Song 2:23/Route 66 2:40 (Live)/Get Off My Cloud 2:56 (Mono)/I'm Free 2:24/As Tears Go By 2:46/Gotta Get Away 2:07/Blue Turns To Grey 2:29/I'm Moving On 2:13 (Live)

Comment: Get Off My Cloud is in mono (see above comment on "Big Hits"). All others in their original mono except as noted.

"Out Of Our Heads - UK"

ABKCO Records, SACD Reissue 2002 (94302)

She Said Yeah 1:35/Mercy Mercy 2:46/Hitch Hike 2:26/That's How Strong My Love Is 2:25/Good Times 1:59/Gotta Get Away 2:07/Talkin' About You 2:32/Cry To Me 3:10/Oh Baby (We Got A Good Thing Goin') 2:09/Heart Of Stone 2:51 (Mono)/The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man 3:07/I'm Free 2:23

Comment: All tracks are in MONO including Heart Of Stone. It should be noted here at this point that the original mono recordings were "electronicaly re-processed" into a bass/treble channel separation when stereo recordings had become the standard in the late 1960's recording industry. This is NOT the case here and probably fundamentally responsible for the overall enhanced sound presentation. Originally recorded mono master tracks are now heard in their native recorded format employing the latest in digital transfer technologies. Note that this is the track list for the original Decca UK vinyl LP release of this title which is sort of a combination of US "December's Children" and "Out Of Our Heads". Also note that is does not include the mega hit Satisfaction.

"Out Of Our Heads"

ABKCO Records, SACD Reissue 2002 (94292)

Mercy Mercy 2:47/Hitch Hike 2:26/The Last Time 3:42/That's How Strong My Love Is 2:25/Good Times 1:59/I'm All Right (Live) 2:25/Satisfaction 3:43/Cry To Me 3:09/The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man 3:07/Play With Fire 2:15/The Spider And The Fly 3:39/One More Try 1:58

Comment: All tracks in mono. Mercy Mercy cleaned up in the best possible way without the distortion noted on some recording sources.

"The Rolling Stones Now!"

ABKCO Records, SACD Reissue 2002 (94202)

Everybody Needs Somebody To Love 3:00 (Now the original US LP release version-as it should be)/Down Home Girl 4:13/You Can't Catch Me 3:40/Heart Of Stone 2:49 (Stereo)/What A Shame 3:06 (Stereo)/Mona (I Need You Baby) 3:35/Down The Road Apiece 2:56 (Stereo)/Off The Hook 2:35/Pain In My Heart 2:12/Oh Baby (We Got A Good Thing Goin') 2:09/Little Red Rooster 3:06/Surprise, Surprise 2:3

Comment: Fortunately, all possible stereo sources have been presented here.

"12X5"

ABKCO Records, SACD Reissue 2002 (94022)

Around And Around 3:04 (Stereo)/Confessin' The Blues 2:48 (Stereo)/Empty Heart 2:38 (Stereo)/Time Is On My Side (Organ version in Mono) 2:54/Good Times, Bad Times 2:31/It's All Over Now 3:27 (Stereo)/2120 South Michigan Avenue 3:39 (Long version in Stereo - The Short version is 2:13)/Under The Boardwalk 2:47/Congradulatons 2:29/Grown Up Wrong 2:06/If You Need Me 2:05 (Stereo)/Susie Q 1:50

Comment: This is the most SIGNIFICANT UPGRADE of all the CD's presented here. All possible stereo tracks presented here. It's like seeing the original restored frescos at the Sistine Chapel versus the painted over and smokey views seen unitl 1994.

"The Rolling Stones (No. 1)"

ABKCO Records, SACD Reissue 2002 (93752)

Not Fade Away 1:48/Route 66 2:21/I Just Want To Make Love To You 2:18/Honest I Do 2:10/Now I've Got A Witness 2:32/Little By Little 2:40/I'm A King Bee 2:37/Carol 2:34/Tell Me 4:05 (Long guitar solo version)/Can I Get A Witness 2:56/You Can Make It If You Try 2:02/Walking The Dog 3:09

Comment: All tracks in their native mono master format with enhanced sound.
